The CHESS project

CHESS (Cultural Heritage Experiences through Socio-personal interactions and Storytelling) is a project, co-funded by the European Commission, that aims to integrate interdisciplinary research in personalisation and adaptivity, digital storytelling, interaction methodologies, and narrative-oriented mobile and mixed reality technologies, with a sound theoretical basis in museological, cognitive, and learning sciences.

The principal objective of CHESS is to research, implement and evaluate both the experiencing of personalised interactive stories for visitors of cultural sites and their authoring by the cultural content experts.

  • Usability and UX evaluation at the Acropolis Museum: On the 17th of December 2012, 15 visitors of all ages participated in a fully personalised storytelling experience in the Archaic Gallery of the Acropolis Museum. The next day, the CHESS Authoring Tool prototypes were discussed and evaluated in a workshop with a group of museum authors.

  • Usability and UX evaluation at the Cité de l'Espace: On October 27 & 28 2012, an evaluation of the CHESS beta system was held with 8 families at the Cité de l'Espace. Children (ranging from 4 to 13 years old) and their parents had the opportunity to experience the CHESS story of their choice using the tablets provided to them.
